AVONDALE, OH (FOX19) - A Grand Jury on Tuesday indicted Darnell Hicks on an attempted murder charge for the drive-by shooting of a 4-year-old girl.
Hicks, 20, also faces six counts of felonious assault for firing into the crowd gathered on Ridgeway Avenue near Reading Road, according to the Hamilton County Prosecutor's Office.
One of the bullets struck 4-year-old Martaisha Thomas in the head. No one else in the crowd was injured in the July 30 shooting.
"The police investigation continues but it does not appear that any of the victims in today's indictment were an intended target of the shooting," said a statement from the prosecutor's office. If convicted of all charges, Hicks faces the possibility of 60 years in prison.
Thomas remains at Cincinnati Children's Hospital with serious injuries.
She is the second innocent young girl shot and critically wounded in Avondale this month alone as shootings hit a 10-year high in the city.
"This is sickening. A young child lies in the hospital with serious injuries after being shot in the head by a bullet intended for someone else," said Prosecutor Joe Deters. "Our entire community should rally together to stop this kind of senseless violence."
