ELSMERE, KY (FOX19) -

Kentucky State Police on Tuesday identified the Elsmere officer who fatally shot a knife-wielding murder suspect during a domestic violence call last week.

Michael J. Metzger, an Elsmere officer just two years, killed Gustavo Ponce Galon shortly after the man stabbed the mother of his children, Maribel Angeles Garcia, inside their Seneca Trail home Thursday night. She was pronounced dead upon arrival at University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

The couple's young daughter saw the brutal attack and ran to a neighbor's for help. The neighbor, Tammy Waltz, called 911.

When police arrived, they found Ponce-Galon inside, still armed with the knife. He ignored several commands to drop the weapon and attempts to engage in conversation with an officer, state police have said.

After several minutes, Ponce-Galon charged at an officer with the knife and was fatally shot.
