A Florida couple accused of abusing five of their eight adopted children made a brief court appearance today. John and Linda Dollar were ordered held without bail in Florida's Citrus County, where they face multiple charges of child abuse and neglect. They allegedly starved, confined and tortured five of the children. The Dollars were arrested in Utah earlier this month after allegedly fleeing Florida following the hospitalization of one of the children. Their lawyer says they didn't know about the charges and were returning to Florida when they were captured. Social workers once praised the Dollars as model parents. That assessment was offered when the couple applied to adopt three of the children a decade ago. A law enforcement officer involved in the case described the abuse as the worst he's ever seen.
