BATESVILLE, IN (FOX19) -

A toddler left in the care of his father’s girlfriend died after the girlfriend beat him last week, according to Batesville Police.

Jennifer Schooler, 33, was arrested Thursday and charged in the death of 3-year-old Bradyn Chadwell.

Schooler admitted to spanking the 3-year-old with a wooden spoon on Aug. 10, according to Batesville Police.

“She then pushed or shoved him into a coffee table, hitting his head. She could tell that Bradyn was injured at that time.” a police affidavit stated.

Two days later, the child became unresponsive and Schooler called 911 with conflicting stories. When EMS arrived to the apartment located on East Boehringer Street, Chadwell was without a pulse. EMS was able to revive him to a certain extent before transporting him to Margaret Mary Hospital. The child was eventually airlifted to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital with multiple bruises, hemorrhages, a subdural hematoma and several fractures. He was taken off life support on Aug. 14.

Officials said Schooler initially claimed Bradyn injured himself when he tripped over the family’s cat and fell into the corner of a fish tank on Monday.

A few days later, she told police that she was “spanking Bradyn with a wooden spoon on his bottom while holding his arm.” Following the spanking to Braydn, she told police that she pushed or shoved him and he fell into a coffee table, hitting his head. She claims that she knew the boy was injured but did not call police until two days later because she did not have insurance.

Thomas Chadwell, the child’s father, was not home during the incident, according to court documents.

In an interview with social workers, Bradyn’s sister said she heard Schooler say “shut up you’re going to get it even worse” as she spanked the child. The girl said she saw a broken wooden spoon lying on the floor before she went to school on Aug. 12.

A review by hospital officials determined Bradyn suffered non-accidental trauma, officials said.

Schooler is charged with aggravated battery resulting in death, battery resulting in death, and neglect of a dependent causing death. She is being held without bond until her hearing on Monday at 3 p.m. in Ripley County Court.

Schooler is charged with Aggravated Battery Resulting in Death as a Level 1 Felony, Battery Resulting in Death as a Level 2 Felony and Neglect of a Dependent Causing Death as a Level 1 Felony.

Bradyn’s 10-year-old sister has been removed from the home and placed in the care of a foster family.
