Reds trade Byrd to Giants

The Reds have traded outfielder Marlon Byrd to the San Francisco Giants for minor league pitcher Stephen Johnson.

Johnson, 24, was selected in the sixth round in the 2012 draft by the Giants. Used as a reliever, Johnson has a 3-0 record, a 3.41 era in 58 innings and 68 strikeouts with San Francisco's Double-A affiliate. Johnson will be assigned to Double-A Pensacola.

The Reds traded for Byrd prior to the 2015 season, sending minor league pitcher Ben Lively to the Philadelphia Phillies. Byrd, 37, is hitting .237, with 19 home runs and 42 RBIs.

The right fielder is owed just over $2 million for the remainder of the season, according to Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal. The Reds and Phillies have been splitting his salary this season.

Byrd will be replaced on the 25-man roster by outfielder Ryan LaMarre. LaMarre, 26, is batting .257, with 8 home runs and 18 RBIs in 300 plate appearances for Triple-A Louisville.
