Wife Slaying

Sentencing for convicted former officer delayed

A judge in Lebanon delayed the sentencing of a retired police officer convicted of complicity in his wife's shooting death after the man's attorneys said a new witness has come forward. Warren County Common Pleas Judge James Flannery yesterday postponed the sentencing for Thomas James "Jim" Barton, a former Springboro police lieutenant. Flannery set a March seventh hearing on a motion filed by Barton's lawyers. A jury last Friday convicted the 49-year-old Barton of complicity to involuntary manslaughter and two counts of complicity to aggravated burglary in the death of Vickie Barton. Thirty-six-year-old Danny Clark -- jailed because of a probation violation -- told Barton's attorneys that a prosecution witness lied to help detectives revive their investigation into Vickie Barton's death. Prosecutors said Barton hired burglars to break into his farmhouse and scare his wife into moving to Springboro so he could become police chief. But the plan went awry and the 40-year-old nurse was shot to death.
