INDEPENDENCE, KY (FOX19) - A gunman who lost a custody battle held the mother of his children hostage during a SWAT standoff inside a Calvalry Road home for several hours Monday before taking his own life, authorities said.
Officials identified the man as Christopher Bridges, 43.
Bridges turned a gun on himself and was pronounced dead at the scene about 11:30 p.m., according to Independence Police Chief Tony Lucas.
His name was not released.
The incident began as a domestic disturbance about 6:30 p.m. when the man tried to force the woman into his car, but she escaped and ran into the home. he followed her inside, where she locked the door, but he kicked it in and held her hostage at gunpoint.
That's when a Northern Kentucky SWAT team responded.
The couple's two young children managed to get out of the house and were not harmed.
After negotiations with police, the man released the woman through a garage door. She was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Then, authorities lost contact with the man. They found his body inside.
Authorities credited neighbors with helping them by relaying vital information as soon as they responded to the scene.
