One of the Tri-State’s most popular haunted houses will not be open for its 40th season.

Sagging attendance and increasing competition forced St. Rita School for the Deaf to cancel their annual haunted house, school director Angie Frith confirmed Friday.

The attraction is one of the few remaining non-profit Haunted Houses in the Tri-State.

“A lot of the houses that are out there are for-profit houses, we’re not for profit. So they can pump their money into renovations. We have difficulty doing that,” said St. Rita’s Executive Direction Gregory Ernst.

The Greater Springdale Jaycees and other volunteers produced the attraction with all proceeds going to the school. Ernst said the disappointed volunteer staff have talked about moving the haunted house to another location, but nothing has been set in stone.

“We have to thank all the volunteers that have been working the last 39 years,” said Ernst.
