FOX19 -

If you have ever felt uneasy about walking home alone there is a new mobile app that allows someone to make sure you get home safe.

Companion is a peer-to-peer safety app that improves public safety and provides peace of mind to anyone on the move.

The free personal-safety app enables users to request a friend or family member to keep an eye on them as they travel late at night.

Family, friends or the public safety department can virtually track the journey home via GPS on an online map. Even if they don't have the app installed, anyone in your contact book can be your Companion.

Those contacted receive an SMS text message with a hyperlink that sends them to a web page with an interactive map showing the user walking to their destination.

If the app detects changes in movement, it asks the user if they're OK. If the user is fine, they press a button on the app to confirm within 15 seconds. If they do not press the button, or a real emergency is occurring, the companion is notified and they have the option to call the police.

The companion is notified once the person is back safely.

Users can send out several requests to different phone contacts in case people are not available to be a companion or not with their phones at the time.
