Lawmakers concern about identity theft is increasing

Senator Charles Schumer says identity theft is too easy and there should be federal rules about how companies can provide or sell access to private information about people. The Senate Judiciary Committee is planning to hold hearings on identity theft and information brokers, prompted by admissions from a company called ChoicePoint that thieves using stolen addresses opened accounts. That gave them access to the company's database of public records, including names, addresses, Social Security numbers and credit reports. And citing a company called Westlaw, Schumer says the way some companies sell information, identity theft is "as easy as operating a computer." The New York Democrat says his staff had no trouble finding social security numbers and other personal information about government officials, movie stars and just average citizens.
