Bearcats rally falls short against Temple

Cincinnati’s late rally was picked off at the hands of Temple in a 34-26 loss on Saturday night. It was Temple’s first win at UC since 1985.

With less than three minutes to play in the game, Temple’s Jahad Thomas fumbled to give UC the ball and a chance to force overtime with two timeouts remaining. On the doorstep in the final seconds, Gunner Kiel threw a pass into a pack of Owls, the ball was tipped and picked off for Kiel’s fourth interception of the game.

Kiel completed 30 of his 52 passes for 427 yards and two touchdowns, including a career-long 88-yard touchdown pass to Mekale McKay, but it was the four interceptions that tainted Kiel’s otherwise impressive numbers.

Thomas did most of the damage for the Owls with 193 yards rushing, a touchdown on the ground and a kick return for a touchdown. Tion Green led the Bearcats ground attack with 59 yards rushing on 13 carries and one touchdown. Mckay caught two passes for 105 yards and one touchdown.

UC’s wild comeback started when they trailed 34-12 in the fourth quarter. They scored 14 points unanswered before Kiel’s fourth interception sealed the deal in the loss. The Bearcats outgained the Owls 557 to 296 in total yards.

Cincinnati travels to Oxford next Saturday to face Miami in the battle for the Victory Bell at 3:30 p.m.
