An 85-year-old man was found dead after fire broke out in a house early Wednesday, Cincinnati police and fire officials said.
His body was located in a bed inside the front of the first floor doorway entrance to the home on Lawn Avenue near Rhode Island Avenue shortly after crews arrived about 12:30 a.m.
His name was not released.
Neighbors spotted the fire and tried to rescue the victim, but they were unsuccessful in attempts to get in through the front door, said Cincinnati Police Lt. Tim Brown, the night chief.
It's not clear yet what caused the fire, but it appears to be accidental, he said.
"Every indication is it's accidental," he said.
There were no operating smoke detectors inside the home, fire officials said.
Damage was set at $25,000.
Fire and homicide investigators are looking into the cause.
