LINCOLN HEIGHTS, OH (FOX19) -

A 21-year-old man who was just released from prison last month faces a new charge of attempted murder of a Hamilton County deputy sheriff late Sunday, authorities announced.

Michael Brown also was booked into the Hamilton County jail early Monday on charges of felonious assault and weapons under disability, said Mike Robison, a sheriff's spokesman. Brown is being held on a $2 million bond.

Brown was apprehended when deputies on patrol responded after hearing several gunshots fired in the area of Jackson and Leggett streets at 10:40 p.m.

"They immediately responded to the area and spotted two guys in the middle of the street firing at each other," said Major Mike Horton. "Our deputies pursued these guys. One of the individuals stopped, turned on the deputy, fired several rounds and ran in between two houses."

A prepared statement from the sheriff's office elaborates: "As Deputy Gordon was driving westbound on Jackson from Magee, he observed two subjects running in his direction. The male subject in the middle of Jackson began firing at another male who was running down the sidewalk. The Deputy exited his car using his vehicle as cover as the male in the middle of street turned and fired at the officer. The rounds struck the marked Sheriff's cruiser, missing Deputy Gordon. Deputy Gordon gave chase as officers from surrounding agencies responded to assist."

Police from other neighboring agencies such as Springfield Twp responded, set up a perimeter and, after a search involving a K-9, found Brown hiding in the backyard of a Jackson Street residence.

He was transported to University of Cincinnati Medical Center with a lacerated hand, possibly from jumping over fence as he fled, Horton said.

Brown was just released from an Ohio prison in August for a prior felonious assault conviction, according to the sheriff's office.

A second suspect remains at large.

The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office's Criminal Investigation Section: 513-851-6000, or Crime Stoppers: 513-352-3040.
