Kara Sewell: Peeling off the layers

Hot lights, heavy makeup… I love my job but it wreaks havoc on my skin.

I’ve struggled with adult acne and a blotchy skin tone for much of my late 20s and 30s. For the most part I have my acne under control but it’s always a battle.

Last spring I decided to try a jet peel, it has the same results as a chemical peel but with no down time. A chemical peel is used to improve the texture of your skin; this treatment causes that skin to peel off. Well, I can’t very well have skin sloughing off my face in HDTV.

The jet peel uses air pressure (100 psi) and saline to deep cleanse, exfoliate, hydrate and oxygenate the skin without every touching it. The peel is painless (tickles in some spots) and refreshing, it takes about 20-30 minutes to complete and your skin feels brand new afterward.

My skin specialist makes it all very relaxing; you lay down with a warm blanket because the saline is cold, close your eyes and enjoy. The skin specialist I see recommends a jet peel once a month but I think it’s practical to go every other month.

During the week I used vitamin C serum, Retinol A, moisturizer and SPF to maintain and enhance the results. This peel costs between $85  -$100; sometimes it feels like a lot of work but I’ve been so happy with the results that I resist the urge to go to bed without washing my face. Anyone who has dealt with acne understands putting in the work.
