It’s been 5 years since a northern Kentucky teenager went missing without a trace.

On September 23rd, 2010, 17-year-old Paige Johnson went to meet friends for an evening out in Covington but never made it. She hasn’t been heard from since.

On Wednesday evening, Johnson’s relatives and friends gathered at Devou Park in Covington to hold a vigil and tree dedication in her memory. “I want to know what happened that night,” said Brittany Haywood, Paige Johnson’s sister.

[Detective: We will always continue looking for Paige Johnson]

For the family of Paige Johnson, the last five years have been measured in unsuccessful searches, in unfounded leads and in unanswered questions.

A man named Jacob Bumpass told police he dropped Johnson off on at 15th and Scott in Covington before her disappearance. He has not been named a suspect. Covington Police Detective Justin Bradbury said Bumpass was less than forthcoming with investigators.

“He gave a very brief statement, said he dropped her off at 15th and Scott in Covington, past that point he’s said nothing about the case,” Detective Bradbury said. “He’s basically been a closed door, he won’t help us figure out where she is.”

Detective Justin Bradbury is the lead investigator on this case, which he says is still very much open. He told us they’ve received several leads over the years, all of which have turned up fruitless.

"We really have not found a trace of her, we have not found a cell phone, none of her clothing. Nothing that we believe to belong to Paige Johnson," he said.

Detective Bradbury is the lead investigator on this case, which he says is still very much open. He also said that each year, around the anniversary of her disappearance, the police department begins to get more tips, more leads as to what may have happened to Paige Johnson on that September night.

“Whenever you get a new tip, you think this may be a piece of information that we don’t have. If it’s something you haven’t heard or seen before, that definitely always gets you excited to look into and hope that something pans out.”

While Wednesday’s 5-year anniversary of the day Johnson went missing dredges up difficult emotions for many, her loved ones continue to remain hopeful that next year will be measured in answers.

Johnson was 17-years-old when she went missing so she would be 23 now. Detectives are currently in the process of creating an age-progression photo of her to help people identify her if she is still alive.
