Republican presidential candidate and Kentucky Senator Rand Paul addressed the Florence Rotary Club Monday afternoon at the Airport Hilton in Boone County.

The visit was in his official capacity as a U.S. Senator and is not a campaign stop.

Senator Paul spoke about the role federal government should play in the state.

"I kind of wish government was kind of just minding its own business. That means it wouldn't be in our business. It really wouldn't care too much what you were doing here in Northern Kentucky. Why do we have a federal government? To defend the country," said Senator Paul.

Senator Paul also touched on his concerns surrounding government spending and says it is the reason he ran for office.

Paul's run for president has hit a bumpy road with recent polls showing him at the bottom of the crowded Republican field of 15 candidates.

Donald Trump, Ben Carson and others have pulled ahead in recent months.

The latest NBC/WSJ Poll showed him tied for eighth at 3 percent. Other polls have shown him as low as 1 percent.

Paul meanwhile says he’s optimistic and argued that the polls will normalize by next year.
