Witness Killed

Police investigate fatal shooting of trial witness

Cincinnati police are working to determine if the shooting death of a man Monday was in retaliation for his testimony earlier in the day against a man charged with murdering his girlfriend. Assistant Hamilton County Prosecutor Judith Mullen says Jose Vazquez was concerned for his safety but took the witness stand because he wanted the man accused of killing his girlfriend brought to justice. Vazquez testified at the trial of 29-year-old Jonathan White, who is accused of shooting Shellie Weis in 2003. Prosecutors say White was upset because the 32-year-old Vazquez broke into his house and stole drugs and money while Weis waited outside. Vazquez testified that shortly after Weis was killed, White told him -- quoting here -- "I got her, and you're next."
