HIGHLAND COUNTY, OH (FOX19) -

The child who died on an utility ATV Saturday in Highland County was ruled an accident, according to a release by the Sheriff's Office.

Deputies from the Highland County Sheriff's Office and the Paint Creek Fire &  EMS responded to the Paint Township residence after they received a call at approximately 6:55 p.m. for an ATV accident involving a 3-year-old child, Sheriff Barrera said.

Upon investigation, it was found that a 3-year old child had been sitting on the front seat of a Ranger utility ATV, while it was running, according to Sheriff Barrera.

A family member was reportedly present and attempting to turn off the Ranger utility ATV, at the same time, the child was attempting to exit the ATV, accidentally stepping on the gas pedal, which caused the ATV to accelerate, according to Sheriff Barrera.

The ATV then traveled out of a barn, striking a tree and pinned the child between the seat and the dashboard of the ATV, authorities said.

Officials say the child was driven to Cincinnati Children's Hospital with severe head trauma, and later succumbed to injuries.
