A Cincinnati pastor has strong ties to Columbia, S.C.. Flood waters have damaged many areas of the city.

“It's a surreal experience to shopping centers that I went to completely submerge up to the rooftops, and to see friends' homes that are complete surrounded,” said Rev. Russell Smith.

Smith is the pastor at Covenant First Presbyterian Church and has been in Cincinnati since 2001, but as of late his mind has been on his home state of South Carolina.

“Nobody expected this type of flooding that was going to happen so it really caught everyone by surprise. And it's been a frightening experience in many ways. I followed many of my friends online through social media,” said Smith.

Reverend Smith say he's been in contact with his parents, who are doing ok.

“The emergency personnel were terrific. They say the coast guard was out on the lakes. She says she saw 15 boats from her back window,” said Smith.

He says adversity is what draws people together and this is the time you hold stronger to your faith.

“Though we may not fully understand what it is that's happening behind the scenes, we trust that God will help us persevere,” said Smith.
