FLORENCE, KY (FOX19) -

A 34-year-old man died, and two others suffered critical injuries in a single-vehicle accident on Dixie Highway near Melinda Lane early Thursday, according to the Boone County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff's officials said crews responded just before 2 a.m.. and  found Joshua Bedel of Williamstown, Kentucky, dead at the scene.

They said he was the driver of a 2014 Chevrolet that lost control as it traveled northbound on Dixie Highway, ran off the road and struck a utility pole.

His two passengers suffered critical injuries, according to the sheriff's office. One was flown with life-threatening injuries to University of Cincinnati Medical Center. The other was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

The passengers were identified as Randall Wuest, 22, of Florence, and Bradley Upton, 19, of Independence. Authorities did not say which man was flown to the hospital and which was driven.

Sheriff's officials said witnesses told them the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed, about 80 mph, just before it slammed into the pole.

The crash also knocked out power in the area.
