Restricting Immigrants

Arizona lawmakers try to further restrict services to illegals

Arizona lawmakers are trying to put more restrictions on illegal aliens. The latest proposal would make the state check the immigration status of parents before students can be enrolled in primary and secondary schools. Similar citizenship checks would also be made for adult education classes. The proposal would also deny state housing assistance to illegal immigrants. Four months ago, residents voted to deny some government benefits to illegal immigrants One Roman Catholic religious brother says he thinks the citizenship check is a bad idea because "it puts into law that undocumented immigrants are not welcome here." But Republican state congressman Russell Pearce says people can't break the law getting into the country, keep breaking it once here, and, as he puts it, "expect us to stand by and do nothing about it."
