Sheriff's investigators are trying to figure out how two chimps that attacked a California man yesterday got out of their cage. The Kern County, California, sheriff's department is investigating whether the owners of the animal sanctuary were in compliance with regulations. The man who was attacked is in critical condition with massive injuries to his face, body and limbs. He and his wife were at the sanctuary to visit another chimpanzee that had been their pet until they were forced to give it up. Two chimps from another cage attacked the man. They reportedly chewed off most of his face, severed a foot, and left him with other severe injuries before the sanctuary owner's son-in-law shot and killed the attacking chimps.
