Around 70 people are still without a place to live after their apartment complex roof collapse last week. According to the city, a pending lawsuit by the city stems from maintenance issues at most of the local properties PE Burton Realty, LLC owns.

Residents who live at 1026 Burton Avenue are now listed as plaintiffs in that lawsuit.

"It's ridiculous, it's sad." said resident Connie Hampton. "It's never been this bad.”

Inside of the Days Inn, frustration was clearly evident this afternoon as residents of the apartment complex recounted their time at the place they called home.

On early Friday morning, firefighters knocked on the residents' doors with a command to leave the building.

Water was pouring in.

"The roof fell in, walls falling in. We walked down the hallway with an umbrella,” said Hampton.

Residents said the problems inside of the apartment complex have been going on for years, and calls for repairs lately have been falling on deaf ears.

"This has been an ongoing problem and you all keep doing patchwork on a problem and that's just a temporary fix, you can't do that with a roof,” said resident Tanya Hall.

The Burton Residents Association have a list of three demands for the owners.

  1. They want all apartments at 1026 Burton Avenue restored to livable conditions as soon as possible.
  2. For the company to continue to pay for housing until residents can move back into their homes.
  3. Provide financial means to compensate for increased cost of food, clothing and transportation.

"We'll they're saying some of us can go back to the building that the city has been out there and looked at the apartment but to me I don't think it's going to be ready,” said hall.
