Gorilla Dies

Oldest captive gorilla is dead

Rudy the gorilla has died at a Pennsylvania zoo -- after apparently living longer than any other gorilla currently in captivity anywhere in the world. He was 49 years old. And a spokesman at the zoo in Erie says even 40 is pretty old for a gorilla. He says captive gorillas can start to have health problems in their late 20s to early 30s. According to the zoo spokesman, Rudy's appetite had recently been declining.

Rudy was captured in Africa as a baby. Before arriving at the Erie Zoo 18 years ago, he lived at zoos in St. Louis, Los Angeles and Cleveland.
