A firefighter in Aurora and Lawrenceburg died in a crash in Northern Kentucky Saturday while off-duty.

According to reports, Jason Richardson, 39, died following a two-vehicle, head-on accident on Woodspoint Drive in Florence just before 2 p.m.

The Aurora Fire Department said that Richardson was a volunteer firefighter with the department since June of 2008. He also served the Lawrenceburg Fire Department.

“He was a good fireman. One of my best firemen,” Aurora Fire Chief Jeff Lane said Sunday morning. “He was one of my best fire apparatus operators and engineers that I relied on a lot. I was saddened when I got the news yesterday. ”

Firefighters at the Aurora Fire Department have assembled a memorial at Richardson’s locker. It is next to the memorial for Jeff Reick, a firefighter who died from a line of duty injury in 1998.

Richardson played the role of Jason from the Friday the 13th movies at the Aurora Fire Department’s annual haunted house fundraiser. “That was one thing that he was really involved in,” Lane said.

Richardson is survived by his daughter. Services have not yet been announced.

The Aurora Fire Department shared tribute to Facebook with the following post:

"Today is a sad day for the Aurora Fire Department, the firefighters, and their families as we have lost one of our own. Firefighter Jason Richardson passed away this afternoon. Please keep his family in your prayers as the deal with this difficult time."

The Florence Police Department has not provided any further information on the accident that claimed Richardson’s life.
