Reds Chef James Major competed on the Food Network… Not once, but 3 times.
The first time was last year, when he competed against other baseball park chefs. He won that one episode of “Chopped.” Chef Major also competed against other champions in “Chopped: Impossible.”
His most recent challenge was on “Cutthroat Kitchen.”
All episodes are shot in the Food Network studios inside Chelsea Market.
“That’s why I wanted to be a chef,” says Major, “I’ve been in restaurants my whole life, but that is when I wanted to go be a chef.”
Major is now the executive chef at Great American Ball Park and received his culinary training at the Culinary Institute of America. However, his love of food is pretty much lifelong. He started as a dishwasher at 14 before becoming a cook in the Navy.
What surprise us was how long these shows take to tape. Grueling, 16 hour days in a hot studio kitchen and a cold stew room. Major did say the chef do become friends over the course of shooting the episode.
You may see him on more cooking competition shows. Chef Major says he has developed a taste for these competition when he’s not busy feeding tens of thousands at GABP.
