Police: Man, 54, dies in Blue Ash crash

BLUE ASH, OH (FOX19) -

A medical condition may be a factor in a two-vehicle crash that killed a 54-year-old motorist Thursday, police said.

James T. Shumate, 54,  of Reading was driving a vehicle westbound on Creek Road at Reed Hartman Highway just before 2 p.m. when he ran red light and was hit broadside in the driver's side door by an oncoming pickup truck, said Lt. Steve Schueler.

Shumate was not breathing when paramedics arrived, he said. The motorist was taken by ambulance to Bethesda North Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The pickup truck driver was injured and also went to Bethesda North Hospital. He is expected to recover, police said.

His age and name were not available.

It doesn’t appear Shumate wore a seatbelt, police said.

He may have suffered a medical condition that contributed to the crash, but police are still waiting for autopsy results, Schueler said.

Alcohol and drugs are not suspected to be factors.

It’s too soon to say if speed contributed, Schueler said.
