MADEIRA, OH (FOX19) -

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office says the deputy who was hit by a vehicle over the weekend is fortunate to have only suffer minor injuries in the accident.

A driver lost control on Interstate 71 Saturday night and struck Deputy Herman Oyler, police said. Oyler was out of his cruiser investigating a separate crash just south of Kenwood Road.

“We're happy to announce Deputy Oyler, while banged up with scrapes and bruises, was released from the hospital and is home recovering. He was fortunate,” read a Facebook post from the sheriff’s office.

27-year-old Elliot Murdock, the driver of the striking vehicle, was taken to  Bethesda North Hospital with minor injuries. Police say alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors in the accident.

The sheriff’s office is warning drivers to slow down and merge for emergency vehicles on the roadway.

“Every year far too many Deputies and Officers are hit as they try to do their job,” the Facebook post stated.
