WHITEWATER TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) -

A fundraiser in Whitewater Township featured an outpouring of financial and moral support for a Hamilton County Sheriff's deputy battling brain cancer.

This isn't the first time local law enforcement has held a fundraiser to benefit one of their fellow officers, but one of the organizers, Captain Rick Neville of the Sheriff’s Department, said they wanted Lawrence Briggs and his family to know they don't have to go through it alone.

“We need Lawrence to understand that he 100 percent has somebody to talk to and he is not going to fight this alone,” said Neville.

It's the kind of unqualified support that means a lot to the Briggs’ grandmother, Melva Shoffner.

“So thankful. We appreciate it so much. It cheers him up. It makes him feel so much better. For one while he was kind of down, but this uplifts him so much,” said Shoffner.

It's Briggs' cheerful personality and generosity, despite his illness, that makes him popular among coworkers in the sheriff's department.

“Even though I have real bad headaches some days I still keep a smile on my face because I refuse to let cancer take me down,” Briggs told FOX19 NOW in an interview last month.

There was a song of hope performed as a tribute to Briggs' strength. His friends put together the fundraiser complete with bagpipers a silent auction with donated items and a raffle.

“He really is what you would call a strong man and his faith and his ability just to see life in such a positive way when others don't is just amazing," said Briggs' friend Lissette Montoya

Officer Briggs wasn’t able to attend the fundraiser because he’s still in the hospital with complications related to his cancer, but organizers said turnout at the fundraiser exceeded their expectations.
