COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) -

Crews battled a large, two-alarm residential fire in the 1600 block of Scott Street Wednesday morning.

No injuries were reported. One person in an adjacent home safely escaped, fire officials said.

"There's a lot of abandoned buildings here in Covington that a lot of people are worried about that the homeless is living in and catching on fire. There's meth labs and everything else in there," said Dan Helton.

At the height of the fire about 9:30 a.m., heavy flames and smoke shot through the roof of the home, which held several apartments.

Firefighters attacked the blaze from the outside.

Large white plumes of smoke wafted from Covington across the Ohio River on the Cincinnati side. The smell of smoke also was strong Downtown and in neighboring communities.

Smoke was beginning to clear by 10 a.m., and no flames were showing. The roof caved in.

Fire officials are investigating the cause. A damage estimate was not immediately available.
