Dual homicide and fire investigations are underway after Cincinnati fire crews found a man's body was found inside a multi-family residence early Monday.

Cleophis Carson's death has been ruled a homicide, but it remains unclear if Carson, 34, died before or after the fire occurred, said Cincinnati Police Captain Terri Theetge.

The Hamilton County Coroner's Office will determine his cause of death, she said.

A fire official at the scene said earlier Monday that Carson died from a traumatic injury unrelated to the fire.

His body was discovered on the second story after fire broke out about 4:44 a.m. in the 4100 block of West 8th Street, according to a prepared statement from the fire department.

He was middle-aged and lived alone in an apartment on the second floor, according to the fire official.

Neighbors said they heard arguing before the fire broke out, but it remains unclear if that was related.

A woman and two children who also reside on the second story were displaced in the blaze.

When fire crews arrived after receiving a report of smoke in the building, they conducted a primary search that was "all clear" with all occupants evacuated safely, initial dispatches indicated.

Crews found a working fire in a second story apartment and quickly extinguished it. The fire was contained to the apartment of origin.

The man's body was found in a kitchen, a dispatcher confirmed.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Damage was set at $20,000, fire officials said in a prepared statement.

FOX19 NOW will update this story with live reports throughout the morning.
