A controversial banner has been stolen from the grounds of the Franklin County Courthouse in Brookville. Ind.

Police say it was taken sometime over the weekend.

The banner was put up last week by the Freedom from Religion Foundation, as direct opposition to the nativity scene that sits outside the courthouse.

The banner read:

At this season of the Winter Solstice, LET REASON PREVAIL.
There are no gods, no devils, no angels, no heaven or hell. There is only our natural world. Religion is but myth & superstition that hardens hearts & enslaves minds.

"To be honest with you, I wasn't surprised we've been dealing with this for decades. Any time we put up a display a lot of them are vandalized or taken down or stolen."  said Jim Helton, an advocate of the sign.

The lawn of the Franklin County courthouse currently holds a mix of secular and religious displays following a legal battle over a Nativity scene.

After getting handed a lawsuit, the county decided to let anyone pay $25 to rent a lot on the courthouse lawn for holiday displays.

The Winter Solstice banner sits alongside a manger holding the bill of rights a Nativity scene.

"We find it odd that this censorship took place of our freedom of speech right, next to the Bill of Rights which gave us that freedom of speech." Helton said.

The Freedom from Religion Foundation is offering a $1,000 reward for information that could lead to an arrest in the case.
