Colerain Twp fire displaces 5, kills 2 dogs

COLERAIN TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) -

Two dogs died and a family of five was displaced when flames swept through a home late Tuesday, fire officials said.

Crews said they found heavy smoke pouring from residence in the 2600 block of West Kemper Road near Pippin Road just after 10 p.m., fire officials said in a prepared statement.

Flames also were visible from a front bedroom.

All residents had safely evacuated, but one person was exposed to a large amount of smoke while looking for pet dogs inside, the statement reads.

This person was examined on scene by Colerain paramedics, but refused further aid or transport to a hospital, according to fire officials.

Crews were able to quickly bring the blaze under control, but not before there was significant damage to the bedrooms and smoke damage throughout the house.

Two of three dogs in the home succumbed to smoke inhalation while a third escaped the fire with one of the residents, fire officials said.

A Colerain firefighter strained a muscle in his upper leg while advancing a fire line, but he remained at the scene, they said.

A preliminary loss estimate was set at $50,000.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
