A man convicted of murder 28 years ago is getting a new trial.

William "Ricky" Virgil, 63, appeared at a hearing Friday afternoon.

In court, his conviction was vacated and a new trial was granted based on new DNA evidence brought forth by the Kentucky Innocence Project.

In 1987, Virgil was convicted of raping and killing 54-year-old Retha Welch.

Authorities say she was raped, stabbed repeatedly and bludgeoned with a vase.

Virgil was sentenced to 70 years in prison.

The next pre-trial hearing is set for March of 2017.
