Shopping safety tips

Area malls and stores expected to be packed again Wednesday with last minute shoppers.

Also among the crowds will be criminals looking to prey on unsuspecting consumers.
Crime historically goes up around the holidays, according to Lt. Ron Murphy with the Norwood Police Department,

He says it’s just about the numbers because there are more people out shopping and dining.
“The criminals know there is going to be more action, people are going to be distracted,” he said. “They’re going shopping, walking to their car, putting things in their trunk. They can watch them go and put something they want in their trunk.

"Smash a window, pop a trunk and they’re gone with it," he said. "People are busy this time of year and they’re just not taking the proper precautions to make sure they’re not a victim of crime.”
Instead, the lieutenant advises to try to do all your shopping in one trip so you don’t have to leave unattended bags in the car.
He also says never leave your purse in a cart. Instead. keep it on your body, preferably in a cross body style in front of your hip. Always make sure it is zipped shut or leave it at home altogether and only carry the cash or credit you need to make purchases.
