Firefighters spread holiday cheer to children in need
NEWPORT, KY (FOX19) -
Firefighters spread holiday cheer to children in need.
On Christmas Eve, the Newport Firefighters Union shared the true meaning of Christmas by giving presents to 20 needy children through their “Beyond the Call” program. Santa and his Newport firefighter elves went from house-to-house in their firetruck packed with presents to give the children a Christmas Eve they’ll never forget.
The “Beyond the Call” program provides assistance for needy families during the holiday season by providing their children with toys, clothing and other essentials items.
"We are giving back to the community and giving back to the kids,” said retired firefighter John Bloomfield.
Bloomfield and his wife spend weeks wrapping, labeling and sorting the huge amount of presents specifically distributed to the children by what they put on their wish list. “It’s an awesome thing to be able to do for people. Santa goes everywhere so we are providing that extra something for people who are in need."
As Santa and the firefighters traveled to the five homes on Thursday night, it was clear how much the gifts brightened the Christmas spirit of not only the children but of the parents and grandparents.
“These are my grandkids and oh, I’m just overwhelmed,” said Jewell Crosty, whose children received gifts from this year’s program. “I’m speechless really, I’m truly blessed. We are so blessed.”
Crosty says without the program, the presents wouldn't have made their way into her grandchildren's hands this Christmas. “My babies, I don’t know what to say, just that I’m happy and they're happy, it's amazing.”
Families are selected with assistance from the Family Resource Center at Newport Primary School.
