BUTLER COUNTY, OH (FOX19) -

Ohio Gov. John Kasich ordered flags be lowered to half-staff on public Butler County buildings in honor of fallen Hamilton firefighter Patrick Wolterman.

Flags will be lowered from sunrise to sunset on Thursday, the day Wolterman, 28, will be buried at Spring Grove Cemetery.

A public memorial service for Wolterman beings at 9:30 a.m. at Princeton Pike Church of God. A procession to the cemetery will follow.

Fire officials said crews responding to an overnight fire call Monday found heavy smoke coming from three sides of the house. Wolterman fell through the floor into the basement soon after entering the Pater Avenue home.

Wolterman was the department’s first line-of-duty death since 1971. He worked with Colerain Fire before started with Hamilton in April 2015.

Wolterman graduated from Roger Bacon High School in 2005 and was recently married.

The Firefighter Wolterman Memorial Fund at First Financial Bank is accepting donations for family.

"Patrick Wolterman is a shining example of a hero. To all the firefighters, police first responders, military and the myriad of other individuals who risk their lives for us on a daily basis, we are grateful," said Steve Schad, current Roger Bacon Principal.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by multiple agencies.
