New Year's Eve is one of the biggest party nights of the year and it's also one of the most dangerous nights for drivers to be on the road.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, January first has the highest rate of car accidents in the calendar year.

New Year's Eve festivities often include alcohol and if you're going to ring in the New Year with a drink or two, do it responsibly and don't get behind the wheel. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism reports 40 percent of all traffic-related deaths during the Christmas and New Year's holidays involve drunken drivers.

“Have a designated driver, call a cab or stay with a friend,” said Cheryl Parker, a spokesperson for AAA.

Parker said over the past few years, there has been a steady increase in impaired driving crashes that happen on New Year’s Eve. According to Parker, one third of Ohio’s traffic fatalities in 2015 were caused by impaired drivers and she doesn’t think this New Year’s Eve will be an exception.

“We’re not just talking about people driving while drunk but also people who are under the influence of substances like heroine or prescription pulls,” Parker explained. “These are threats to the safety of motorists, especially on a special night like New Year’s Eve.”

Another reliable ride home is using a car-sharing service like Uber or Lyft. Uber’s website states that New Year’s Eve is their busiest night of the year and on that night, their busiest hours are from 12:30 a.m. – 2:30 a.m. So, if you plan on taking this route, expect to wait a little while longer for a ride and also expect to pay more since the surge prices will surely skyrocket.

This New Year's Eve, Uber will also be donating a portion of each safe ride to Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
