High school plans memorial Mass on Saturday for nun slain in Brazil

A Roman Catholic girls' high school plans a memorial Mass on Saturday for an Ohio nun who attended convent there before going to Brazil 38 years ago.

Sister Dorothy Stang was shot to death last month in Brazil, where authorities have charged four men in her slaying. She was buried in Brazil under a mango tree in the rain forest that she had worked to protect. Mount Notre Dame High School in suburban Cincinnati expects as many as 100 family members for the Mass on Saturday afternoon for Stang, who was one of ten children. Mount Notre Dame's president, Sister Rita Sturwold, says students at her school are fascinated by Stang's legacy.

The 73-year-old Stang was a member of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, the order which operates Mount Notre Dame High. She attended Julienne High School in her native Dayton before spending her senior year at what was then Mount Notre Dame Academy attending the convent there.
