MIDDLETOWN, OH (FOX19) -

17 Persian cats were found stacked in cages inside a suspected kitty mill over the weekend.

Joseph's Legacy Rescue called the living conditions “horrific” and said most of the cats required immediate veterinary care.

The rescue group is seeking donations for treatment of the cats’ injuries and illnesses. During treatment the cats will stay at foster homes before being put up for adoption.

It’s unclear how long the cats lived in stacked dog cages inside a tiny bedroom. Charges have yet to be filed against the owners.

Rescuers had no choice but to shave the cats due to the mattes and feces stuck in animal’s hair, according to the Joseph's Legacy Rescue donation page.

Unfortunately, one 15-year-old cat did not make it through the rescue.

“She was severely emaciated, had abscessed wounds, worms, fleas and needed surgery. She was not able to go through any treatment in her condition. We are devastated by her loss,” Josephs Legacy wrote on Facebook.

The cats will be up for adoption once they’re healthy.

Donations can be made the Joseph’s Legacy You Caring page.
