CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

Ironically, just before iconic singer David Bowie's death was announced early Monday, the Cincinnati Zoo officials named a newborn baby penguin after him.

The zoo said over the weekend the baby, known as a blue or fairy penguin, hatched at 6 a.m. Friday, weighing less than 2 ounces. It was the zoo's first animal birth of 2016.

The zoo turned to Facebook for suggestions on what to name the baby penguin.  Friday was both David Bowie's and Elvis Presley's birthday, and zoo officials said there was a lot of support for the Elvis name.

But the zoo already has a king penguin named for "the King," so "Bowie" was the choice for the new arrival.

"He's very vocal like David Bowie would be," said a zoo keeper in a video uploaded to YouTube Monday.

Bowie turned 69 on Friday and released a new album, "Blackstar."

A representative for the influential British musician announced early Monday Bowie died peacefully in his sleep and was surrounded by family.
