The service technician injured in a boiler explosion at Crossroads Church last week remains in the Intensive Care Unit at University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

A representative from Crossroads Church provided an update on John Heiert’s condition Monday:

"He sustained multiple, severe fractures to his face and has had 2 surgeries so far. He also suffered a fractured sternum, small spinal fractures and a deep laceration to his right lower leg that also needed surgical repair. One of his injuries has led to a leak of cerebrospinal fluid, they are watching this closely. He will go back into surgery Tuesday to essentially have brain surgery to repair this."

Heiert was working at the Miami Township branch of Crossroads on Jan. 6 when a boiler exploded. The explosion blew out a couple of the church’s windows and also sent another service technician and two Crossroads employees to the hospital. They reportedly suffered minor injuries.

A photo provided by Crossroads shows Heiert’s scraped and bruised hand giving a “thumbs up” from his hospital bed.

He’ll likely need more surgeries in the future for reconstruction.

“John, his wife and family are so appreciative of the love and support from so many,” the statement reads. An online account is accepting donations for the Heiert family.

The Bridgetown Road Crossroads is holding regular services as the cause of the boiler explosion is continuing to be investigated.
