Kara Sewell: Work it: Tabata Training

FOX19 -

Does the camera add ten pounds? Yes! Maybe five on a good day. But maintaining a healthy weight goes beyond how heavy I look on camera.

In my late 20’s I packed on the pounds because of a poor diet and lack of exercise, I’m talking nightly Wendy’s dates with my husband and plenty of couch time on the weekends.

I had a wakeup call one day when even my ‘fat’ jeans didn’t fit and I got winded going up the stairs to my apartment. I’ve never enjoyed working out – hello, it’s work! But I figured if I was going to change my lifestyle I better find something tolerable so I joined a friend for a hot yoga class. SOLD! Power flow yoga fit me like a glove. I started practicing at a studio in Wichita 5 days a week! And the 75-minute class felt more like 30-minutes.

Fast-forward to my awesome move to Cincinnati, I’ve incorporated weight training to my routine to burn more fat. Frankly, it wasn’t an option there are so many great restaurants in the Tri-State and don’t get me started on the unique beers. I joined ‘FitNext’ on Vine Street downtown last February thanks to encouragement from my co-anchor Rob Williams. The 60-minute class is group personal Tabata training.

Tabata training is a High-Intensity Interval Training workout that lasts four minutes. The Tabata workout lasts only four minutes, but it's likely to be one of the longest four minutes you've ever endured. The structure of the program is as follows:

Workout hard for 20 seconds

Rest for 10 seconds

Complete eight rounds.

You push yourself as hard as you can for 20 seconds and rest for 10 seconds until you complete eight sets. You can do pretty much any exercise you wish. You can do squats, pushups, rows or any other exercise that works your large muscle groups. Kettlebells work great, too.

The trainers at ‘FitNext’ have a program preset for their clients so you just walk in and get to work. To say I thought I was going to die the first few weeks during class is an understatement; but I didn’t, clearly and now I’m seeing results.

I share my story because like most people I struggle to keep the weight off and work hard to stay fit. I still can’t seem to put down the sugar, did you know it’s conversation hearts season? Those little bits of sugar goodness that come out around February, I digress.  Everyone has to find the best work out for them, I can’t stand to run but Rob finds it relaxing. To each their own, right?

I should share ‘FitNext’ has locations on Sycamore (downtown) Montgomery and Covington. The trainers are more like friends now, friends who yell at me when I’m not giving it my all – kidding! (sort of)
