Danville, OH police officer shot, killed after suspect told ex-girlfriend he was looking to kill cop

DANVILLE, OH (WXIX) -

A man is in custody after allegedly shooting and killing a Danville, Ohio police officer after he told his ex-girlfriend that he was looking to kill a cop, according to the Knox County Sheriff's Office.

Police say a woman contacted the dispatch center around 11:20 Sunday night and told officials that her ex-boyfriend, Herschel Jones III, had left with weapons and was looking to kill an officer.

Danville Police Officer Thomas Cottrell was found shot behind the Danville Municipal Building around 11:47 p.m. Sunday night. Cottrell's weapon and cruiser were missing, police said. 

Herschel Jones III was taken into custody after a short foot chase near Danville Park around 1:36 a.m. Monday morning. 

Danville is located about 60 miles northwest of Columbus.
