Woman, 2 dogs rescued from freezing pond

Firefighters rescued a woman and her dogs after going under a frigid, icy pond in West Chester Monday.

Police said the woman was chasing a dog that got away and she eventually ran onto the ice and fell through.

A neighbor that called for help said she still doesn't know how her friend survived the ordeal.

"Over there in the water was a woman and her two dogs and she was up to her neck in the freezing water," said Mollie Mihalik.

That is what she saw when the cries for help brought her outside to see what was going on.

She then immediately called 911 for help.

"Every time she tried to climb up, the dogs would get on top of her to get out too and she would go back under," said Mihalik. "I don't know how she survived, I don't know how long she was in there. I didn't see her until I heard her yelling."

Mihalik said firefighters quickly arrived for the daring rescue that took several tries until finally getting the woman and the dogs to dry land.

"The third guy brought a ladder and laid it across the ice," recalled Mihalik. "They got her onto the rungs of the ladder and somebody on the shore pulled the ladder and she slid across the ice."

The dog owner went to the hospital and she and the dogs are reportedly doing just fine.

"Everything turned out alright," said Mihalik. "Amazing."
