OVER-THE-RHINE, OH (FOX19 NOW) -

I’m sure many of you know by now I live in Over-the-Rhine and while there are dozens of things the neighborhood has to offer, its food scene is probably in the top three.

I am asked a lot where I like to eat and while I’ve yet to find a place I flat out don’t want to patron I do have my favorites and I thought I would share in case you find yourself in OTR. I must note, these are MY favorites and no one is paying me for this post; that being said if I got a free burger out of the deal I wouldn’t turn it down. Ha!

The Anchor, 1401 Race Street – Fresh seafood, divine burger, decadent desserts and off the charts cocktails. Convinced yet? It took me and my husband months to finally try this restaurant and now we’re regulars. Being from south Texas it’s hard for seafood restaurants in the Midwest to win me over but The Anchor’s variety of freshness of its seafood makes even the Trout BLT decadent. My favorite dishes include the crawfish beignets, sea scallops and burger (I know) but it’s mouthwatering. Side note: order it for lunch, it’s cheaper. In fact, if you’re hesitant at all visit them for lunch, their menu is exceptional and reasonably priced; the fish and chips is $13 and it won’t leave you hungry. If you visit this winter please go back when it’s warmer because they have the best patio in OTR. Their patio faces Washington Park and on Friday nights, in the summer, you can listen to live music in the park from your table. As far as cocktails go try the Fair Harbor and Anchor Old Fashioned. Enjoy!

Krueger’s Tavern, 1211 Vine Street – Burgers, hot beer cheese and plenty of brews on tap this place seems to be overlooked located next to Bakersfield. But next time you’re craving tacos and the wait is 2 hours slip next door where you’re certain to get in quickly. I’m not sure why it’s not as crowded but I can only assume it’s because they have two levels and an outdoor patio. OTR is notorious for expensive and let’s be honest (at times) over priced cuisine but Krueger’s burger is $9 and hands down the best I’ve eaten in Cincinnati. I’ve enjoyed every burger on their menu (except veggie) and I while I typically stick with the original, try the Spicy if you want a real kick! Like The Anchor, eat on the patio, during the summer and sip on their hard ice tea/lemonade while munching on the Tomato Pesto Jar. Bonus – they are open until midnight and take food orders until 11 p.m.! And their throwback music selection is on point. Okay, I should stop now.

Salazar Restaurant & Bar, 1401 Republic - Off Vine but certainly not off the radar, this restaurant will have a wait before the doors even open but don’t let that deter you; eat early or late but whatever you do try this treasure. The menu (in my opinion) is eclectic with nibbles like a fried oyster sandwich, risotto and celery root soup with apple butter, apples, hazelnuts and baby greens. Hello flavor! The vibe is a little Greenwich Village in
NYC with a cozy Cincinnati flair. Remember to go to the restroom so you can see an original picture of what the place looked like decades ago – it’s a good reminder of how much history is in this fabulous part of the city. I’ve eaten at their gigantic, marble bar numerous times so don’t say no if they ask, embrace the change of scenery. The menu is pricier so it might be best for a special occasion but like The Anchor they have a lunch menu that is affordable and the restaurant has a completely different feel in daylight. I suggest experiencing both.

BONUS! I will let you in on a little secret, Low Spark, right across from Salazar is an up and coming bar with a 70’s vibe; the music is sing-along worthy and their happy hour lasts until 8 p.m.!

Score! I love their ‘Harvey Wallbanger’ and Rye cocktails but for $2 off drafts I will drink on a beer too. I’m there a lot because of their low key and unpretentious atmosphere.

Hope this has been helpful and maybe I will see you around the neighborhood, be sure to say hi!
