NKY mom calls for child abuser registry after daughter injured

Newport mom wants registry for Child Abusers after daughter injured

CAMPBELL COUNTY, KY (FOX19) - A mom is calling for a public database listing convicted child abusers – one that is similar to a sex offender registry.

Jennifer Diaz, of Newport, has started a petition to get "Sophie's Law" on the books. Diaz says her six-month-old daughter, Sophie, was a victim of child abuse.

Sophie's babysitter, Desiree Rankin, pleaded guilty to abusing Sophie and another child in a Campbell County courtroom.

Sophie was injured while in the care of Rankin at Diaz's home.

"I received a phone call from the babysitter, and under the impression Sophie was having seizures," Diaz wrote on her petition page.

Doctors noticed the redness surround Sophie's ear while she was checked into Children's Hospital.  They also found a bruise around the ear that eventually began to scab, Diaz said.

The question is what happened - how did Sophie get the injures? Diaz think we will never know since Rankin agreed to a plea and will be sentenced in the coming days.

Although she took a plea deal, Rankin denies injuring the child, according to Diaz. She will be sentenced on Feb. 2.

FOX19 NOW attempted to get in touch with Rankin, but were not successful.
