NEWPORT, KY (FOX19) -

A local babysitter will spend three months behind bars after pleading guilty to child abuse.

Police say Desiree Rankin hurt six-month-old Sophie Diaz in November 2014.

“I received a phone call from the babysitter and, under the impression Sophie was having seizures, l left work immediately and rushed her to the hospital,” said Sophie’s mother, Jennifer.

Medical staff found redness and bruises around the child’s ear.

After several days of testing in the hospital, Sophie was released with no permanent damage.

Since the incident, the infant’s mother has advocated for "Sophie's Law" - a proposed public database listing convicted child abusers, one that is similar to a sex offender registry.

Diaz’s online petition has received more than 300 signatures.

Rankin was sentenced in a Campbell County courtroom Tuesday.
