Middletown PD: Chemical leak at Pilot Chemical contained

MIDDLETOWN, OH (FOX19) - Middletown Fire has contained the chemical leak at Pilot Chemical on Yankee Road Thursday morning.

Crews say the chemical leak was caused by a tanker truck leaking sulfur trioxide at around 11:13 a.m.

Middletown Fire are working with Pilot crews to clean the affected spill area, Middletown officials said.

The shelter in place has been lifted, according to Middletown Police.

To ensure safety precautions, children at Amanda Elementary School have been sheltered indoors. Residents living in the Amanda, Oneida neighborhoods west of Yankee Road are advised to stay inside and "avoid skin contact and breathing of any suspicious clouds" in the area until further notice.

No evacuations have been ordered at this time.

No injuries have been reported.

Officials said given the clear weather conditions, it's expected the release would dissipate quickly thanks to the clear weather conditions.

Police have blocked off Yankee Road between Oxford State and Todhunter roads until further notice.

FOX19 NOW has a crew on scene and will continue to provide updates on this story.
