HAMILTON COUNTY, OH (FOX19) -

Hamilton County's coroner says she needs help.

Dr. Lakshmi Sammarco said the number of heroin overdoses has left the county with a 100-day backlog of non-emergency DNA tests.

"Even though we are in desperate need of increased space, we are also in need of more scientists and forensic pathologists," Hamilton County Coroner Dr. Lakshmi K. Sammarco told FOX19 NOW's Tricia Macke.

"Our DNA section has been inundated with submissions, partly due to the very busy heroin task force. And we have performed 20 percent more autopsies this year than last year at this time.

"Our pathologists are reaching the limit of what they are permitted to perform in order for us to maintain our accreditation. These are crucial needs in our office in order for us to continue to provide the excellent level of service that the people of this county have come to expect and deserve.”

FOX19 NOW will continue to follow this story.
